Pits : Pits are thin areas on the secondary cell walls of plants. They look like depressions on the walls. Also, they aid in the transport of minerals and water between the cells. Usually, a pit has a complementary depression in its neighbouring cell. These are termed ‘pit pairs’. The structure of a pit includes – Pit cavity, Pit membrane, Pit aperture
Types of Pits : The two major types of pits are – Simple pits and bordered pits. Bordered pits have a secondary wall thickening over the pit cavity, whereas simple pits do not have borders. A pit pair between a simple and bordered pit is called a half-bordered pit. A pit with no complementary pit is termed a blind pit.

Plasmodesmata : Plasmodesmata are fractions of the endoplasmic reticulum that connects the cells. They are usually lined by a plasma membrane. Also, it has a desmotubule and cytoplasmic sleeve. The space between the plasma membrane and desmotubules has a few microchannels. The major role of plasmodesmata is to regulate the movement of molecules between the cells. Also, they help in short-distance movements. These plasmodesmata are abundantly seen in the pit membranes.

원형질연락사(plasmodesmata)는 살아 있는 세포의 세포벽에 접해서 형성되는 일종의 관상구조로 물질의 이동이 원형질연락사에 의해 이루어진다.
원형질연락사는 인접세포간의 세포질연락을 유지한다. 세포벽의 원형질연락관은 원형질막과 연결되며, 그 중심부에는 소포체낭 상부와 연결된 소포체소관이 있으며 여타의 부분은 세포질인 기질로 충전되어 있다. 원형질연락사는 보통 1㎟ 당 1 백만 개 이상이다. 고등식물세포의 경우, 원형질연락사의 수는 1㎛2당 1-15개 정도이다. 입체적으로는 직경이 약 16-20㎚인 원통형의 구멍이다. 원형질연락사는 지름이 수십 ㎚인 관상구조로 미분화된 세포와 1차벽만 있는 세포사이에 존재한다. 원형질연락사는 세포벽에 부분적으로 집중되어 있는데 이러한 부분을 1차막 공역(primary pit field)이라 한다. 이곳에서는 집중적으로 세포 간 연락을 하고 있으며 이 부분의 세포벽은 다소 엷어져 있다.
원형질연락사는 세포 간에서 연속적으로 연결되어 있는 원형질막의 관으로 둘러싸여 있다. 그 관의 중앙에는 데스모관(desmo-tubule)이라는 다른 관모양의 것이 있는데 이것은 소포체의 부분이 압착되어 세포와 세포 간에 퍼져 있는 부분이다. 동물세포의 간극연접과 마찬가지로 완전히 수동적이지 않고, 어떤 것을 통과시킬 것인지에 대해 상당한 조절기능을 수행한다. 원형질연락사는 지름이 큼에도 불구하고 800달톤보다 작은 물질만 통과시킨다.
